Capriole - Vienna, Austria
A talented horse-woman from her own history, my mother shared stories of the famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna. As I found myself on 5-23-94 standing in the great hall with the Lipizzans below me, her dream shared was realized. The move in this painting is called the Capriole. A Capriole is a crowning achievement of the Haute Ecole, which few horses have the special strength and courage to achieve. The perfectly trained stallion leaps into the air and at the highest points, extends his hindlegs vigorously. This painting called upon my patience learned with charcoal...what is white is the paper. There is no cover-up. No room for error. The challenge I adore.
